Leigh Cricket Club sign first-class duo

Genlec-sponsored Leigh Cricket Club has signalled its intention for next season with the signing of not one, but two current first-class contracted cricketers, Karl Brown of Lancashire and Steven Mullaney of Nottinghamshire.

Karl Brown has been re-signed by Leigh following a prolific season in which he scored 934 runs and took 74 wickets for them. Karl, who is a product of the highly effective Lancashire academy system and signed a professional contract with Lancashire in 2006, will play for Leigh whenever his first-class commitments with Lancashire allow.

Steven Mullaney returns to his home-town club after recently declining a two-year deal at Lancashire in favour of a move to Nottinghamshire where he is likely to figure highly in their first team plans. The move means Mullaney was unable to again fully commit to Premier League stars Bootle, where last season he scored 909 runs at an average of 64.92.

Leigh's Captain Dave Dove said: "I am delighted that we are able to attract such high quality cricketers to Leigh. We are very lucky and I would like to thank our sponsors, GENLEC, and those who run the club for the support they have given us.

"Karl and Steve are great cricketers, but they are also fantastic local role models for the many youngsters we now have involved here. It is important to us to achieve success today, but also to build for tomorrow."

Established in 1854, Leigh CC has four senior teams and a strong junior section consisting of five junior age group teams from under 9's through to under 17's. The club is supported by ten ECB qualified coaches and supports the playing of cricket for all ages, abilities and ethnic backgrounds
